Sarah, Sandy, and I had a good time just wandering the beach on Tybee Island. Too bad I couldn’t get pictures of Sarah and me on the beach at night. There was a full moon and the breakers were crashing against the beach while we sipped wine and stood in the surf. It was one of the most romantic and exciting experiences I’ve ever had.

Anyways, I’ve got other, less romantic pictures, but they’re still pretty good.

Here’s the bed and breakfast we stayed at for our last night on the island. It was decent, but the service and community aspects weren’t that great. However, we did meet some nice Germans at breakfast. They were a little offended by the upcoming Octoberfest celebration in Savannah. They didn’t think that $3 Coors Lite in a plastic cup was very representative of German culture.

You should have seen the guy in the yellow shirt jump when his younger brother (son?) in the green shirt got a bite on his line. He went crazy. Too bad he couldn’t hold onto the fish. Look close near his hands and you can see it slipping out. It bounced on the pier and dropped back into the water (about a 10m drop).

The view from on the pier, looking down the beach. It was a little cold, but the kids were still having a great time.

Sarah and Sandy goofing off on the beach. If you plant your feet in the sand, the water will eventually erode the sand under you. You slowly sink in until your feet are buried. Or, you can take Sarah’s approach and just dig in straight away.

A perfect setup. I wrote my initials in the sand and then waited, camera in hand, for the surf to dare erase it. I swear, this picture looks straight off of a greeting card.

A lone picture of the cameraman, doing his best to look cool. Now I know how my father feels. Thousands of pictures and I’m in 1 or 2 of them when I beg someone to take my picture.

Two young lovers enjoying some time on the beach. Savannah and Tybee Island will always be special to us because that’s where we spent our honeymoon.

It was just our luck that we landed on Tybee Island during the Pirate Festival. There were lots of good costumes, but that was about it. The activity planning was pretty pathetic, so we skipped most of the festival and went to the beach. We got some good pictures, though.

No self respecting pirate would get less than 85 mpg! The space for swag is limited, though, so you have to be choosy when looting.

This is my favorite picture of the trip. I’m still trying to come up with a caption. Please post comments and help me come up with something funny.

“The devil came down to Georgia; he was looking for a soul to steal…” He sure looks like Charlie Daniels to me. I don’t see a golden fiddle, so I assume he lost that one and is therefore souless…

Local officials really took the Pirate Festival very seriously. Honestly, though, I was very tempted to plunder and loot their costumes. I am lucky enough to work at a place where wearing such clothing would actually gain me some respect.

Keith Richards. No doubt about it. Look here kids, see what sex, drugs, and rock and roll will do to you. Stay in school.

Local wenches. We actually asked one for dining advice. Big mistake. Cheap booze and cigarette smoke do not a fine dinner make…

A couple young pirates in training. Maybe one day we too can get drunk at local gatherings with fellow townies.

Sarah and I went with her mother to Savannah, GA. Sarah had a conference presentation to make about her website, Southern Spaces and we thought we’d make a vacation of it.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are several thousand words’ worth:

These are some pictures of Sarah and her fellow Emory presenters, Zeb and Jay. Zeb has the suit and Jay is the one with the devil horns.

Savannah is very bicycle friendly. The streets are flat and wide, and there are plenty of bike racks. SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) students seem to depend heavily on their bicycles to get around. Or, if you don’t want to pedal, you can rent a scooter-mobile (the little 2-seater seen above), although it’s pretty expensive. I think it’s only meant for tourists.

We ate at a small dive that sold sushi and teriyaki stuff. The prices were tiny, but the portions were huge. A nice, cheap restaurant is always a good find.

A couple pictures of us goofing off next to the river. Merchants were getting set up for Octoberfest. We actually bought one of the little copper lizard thingies. Sandy got me one for my birthday. Hopefully, we’ll put it out on the porch somewhere to scare people.
